Software Engineer Resume: Examples (2026)

Software engineer resume example with summaries, bullet points, skills and optional certifications, plus official pay and outlook data and a free template.

Template:

A backend software engineer with five years of experience applying for a senior software engineer role on a payments team.

Why this resume works

  • Every bullet carries a measurable result a manager can check in an interview: checkout errors down from 1.8 to 0.3 percent, deploys from 2 a week to 15, a cloud bill cut by $41,000 a year.
  • The skills line names the exact languages and tools (Go, Python, PostgreSQL, Kafka, AWS, Kubernetes), so a recruiter matching the posting finds them in seconds.
  • Designing and leading the build of the payment retry service, plus mentoring 3 junior engineers, show the senior-level ownership the target role asks for.

A software engineer resume has one job: convince an engineering manager that the things you built worked, and that you can build the next thing on their list. The first reader is often a recruiter who is not an engineer, matching your page against the posting's list of languages and tools. The second is a hiring manager who skims for scale (how many users, how much data, how fast), for ownership (did you design it or only touch it) and for proof that your code made a difference to the business. A good resume serves both readers without drowning either in acronyms.

This guide shows what to include, how to write project and work bullets with real numbers, the skills and tools postings ask for, which certifications are worth listing (none are required), and a complete example for a backend engineer with five years of experience applying for a senior role. If Java is your main language, the Java developer resume example goes deeper on that stack.

How to write a software engineer resume

1

Give a headline that names your kind of engineering

Under your name, write the role and the area you work in, for example Software Engineer, Backend and Payments or Frontend Engineer, React. Software engineering covers very different jobs: building websites, mobile apps, the servers behind them, or internal tools. The headline tells the recruiter which pile you belong in. Add your email, phone, city and, if it has work worth seeing, a link to your GitHub or portfolio.

2

Write a summary with scale, stack and target

Three sentences: your years of experience and what you build, the size of what you work on (users, orders, requests per second, data volume), and the role you want. Name your main languages here too. Five years building payment services in Go and Python for about 40,000 orders a day tells a manager more than any list of adjectives.

3

Put experience first and make each bullet a result

Once you have a year or more of paid work, experience goes right after the summary. Each bullet starts with an action (built, designed, cut, moved, led), says what you did in plain words, and ends with what changed: faster pages, fewer errors, lower costs, more releases, hours saved for another team. If you cannot share exact numbers, use percentages or ranges you could defend.

4

Show ownership, not just participation

Hiring managers want to know which part was yours. Say designed when you designed it and contributed to when you did not. For senior roles, include design reviews you led, services you own, incidents you ran and people you mentored. For junior roles, show code you shipped to real users and feedback you acted on.

5

List skills the way the posting does

Make a short skills section of languages, frameworks, databases, cloud platforms and tools, using the posting's own names (PostgreSQL, not Postgres DB; AWS, not the cloud). Many employers use applicant tracking software (the system that stores and searches applications), and recruiters search it by these exact words. Only list what you could discuss in a technical interview.

6

Add projects if you are early, and keep it to one page

New graduates and career changers should add two or three projects with a link, the problem, the tools and a result, such as used by 300 students each week. Put your degree or bootcamp under education. Certifications are optional and go last. Keep the resume to one page until you have about ten years of experience, and send it as a PDF.

Skills and keywords for a software engineer resume

These skills come up again and again in software engineer postings. Use the ones you really have, in the posting's own words, in the skills section and inside your bullets.

Hard skills

  • One or two main programming languages (Python, Java, Go, JavaScript or TypeScript, C#)
  • Designing and building APIs (the connections that let programs exchange data)
  • SQL and relational databases
  • Automated testing (unit and integration tests)
  • System design: how parts of an application fit together and handle growth
  • Cloud platforms (AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud)
  • Containers (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes)
  • CI/CD: tools that test and release code automatically
  • Monitoring, logging and fixing problems in live systems
  • Security basics: authentication, secrets handling, safe input

Soft skills

  • Explaining technical tradeoffs to non-engineers
  • Giving and receiving code review feedback
  • Breaking a large task into small, shippable pieces
  • Writing clear design documents
  • Mentoring newer engineers
  • Staying calm while on call for a live system

Tools and software

  • Git with GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket
  • Jira or Linear for tracking work
  • VS Code or IntelliJ IDEA
  • Docker and Kubernetes
  • GitHub Actions, Jenkins or CircleCI
  • Datadog, Grafana or New Relic for monitoring

Software engineer resume summary examples

Pick the one nearest your level and swap in your own details. Each names what you build, the scale, your stack and the job you want.

Entry-level software engineer

Computer science graduate with a 12-week backend internship where I shipped two features to a scheduling app used by 8,000 clinics. Comfortable in Python, JavaScript and SQL, and used to working in pull requests with code review. Built a course-planning web app now used by about 300 students a week. Seeking a junior software engineer role on a product team.

Mid-level software engineer

Full-stack engineer with four years building customer-facing features in TypeScript, React and Node.js for a subscription business with 250,000 active users. Own the billing pages end to end, from database changes to the screens customers see, and cut page load time by 40 percent last year. Seeking a software engineer role with more ownership of product decisions.

Senior software engineer

Senior software engineer with nine years across backend and infrastructure, currently leading a team of five that runs the search service for a travel site handling 3,000 requests per second. Led the move from a single large application to separate services, and set up the on-call and incident review process the department now uses. Seeking a staff engineer or technical lead position.

Software engineer resume bullet examples

Each bullet names what you built or changed, adds a number and, where it can, ends with the result for users or the business. Keep the shape and use your own facts.

  • Rebuilt the product search page in React and TypeScript, cutting load time from 3.2 to 1.1 seconds on mobile.
  • Designed a caching layer with Redis that took 70 percent of read traffic off the main database during holiday peaks.
  • Shipped a feature flag system that let 6 teams release changes to 5 percent of users before everyone.
  • Wrote the data migration that moved 14 million customer records to a new schema with zero downtime.
  • Reduced failed nightly jobs from about 20 a month to 2 by adding retries, alerts and clearer logging.
  • Led the incident review for a 45-minute outage and delivered 5 fixes that prevented a repeat.
  • Built an internal tool that saved the finance team 10 hours a week of copying numbers between spreadsheets.
  • Added end-to-end tests for the sign-up flow, catching 9 bugs before release in the first quarter.
  • Integrated a new shipping carrier API in 3 weeks, giving customers 2 more delivery options at checkout.
  • Interviewed 25 engineering candidates and helped write the team's new take-home exercise.
  • Upgraded 40 services to a supported Python version ahead of its end of support date.

Certifications for software engineers

No license or certification is required to work as a software engineer in the United States. Employers judge you on your experience, projects and technical interview. Certifications are optional, but cloud certifications show up often in postings, especially for backend, platform and DevOps roles, and they can help a newer engineer prove hands-on skills. These are the ones that come up in postings:

  • AWS Certified Developer, Associate from Amazon Web Services: for building and deploying applications on AWS. AWS says it is valid for three years.
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Associate from Amazon Web Services: for designing systems on AWS, common in backend and platform postings.
  • Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) from The Linux Foundation and the Cloud Native Computing Foundation: a hands-on exam solved at the command line, useful if your team runs applications on Kubernetes.
  • Oracle Certified Professional: Java SE 21 Developer from Oracle: worth listing if Java is your main language; the Java developer guide covers it.

The example, line by line

The example is for Daniel, a backend engineer with five years at one online retailer who wants a senior role on a payments team. Here is what each part does.

Headline: Software Engineer, Backend and Payments. It tells the recruiter both the kind of engineering he does and the business area, which is exactly what the target team does.

Summary: the first sentence gives five years, Go and Python, and the scale (about 40,000 orders a day). The second says how he works and what he has improved. The third names his AWS certification and the role he wants.

Experience: his current job has four bullets. The payment retry service comes first because it matches the new job most closely, and it ends with a result (checkout errors from 1.8 to 0.3 percent). The Kubernetes move shows speed (deploys from 2 a week to 15) without more incidents. The $41,000 saving is a number any manager understands, and mentoring 3 engineers shows he is already doing senior work. His first role gets two bullets: 12 internal APIs for a support team of 60, and test coverage raised from 45 to 82 percent.

Skills: ten entries in the same words the posting uses, placed above education because at five years his skills matter more than his degree.

Education and certification: his computer science degree with the year, then the AWS certification from 2024. Both are short because the experience section already makes the case.

Mistakes that cost software engineers interviews

  • A wall of technologies. Forty tools in a skills block read like a search keyword list. Keep ten to fifteen you use for real, and show the main ones inside your bullets.
  • Describing tasks instead of outcomes. Worked on the checkout service says nothing about you. Say what you changed and what happened next: fewer errors, faster pages, lower cost.
  • Hiding which part was yours. We migrated to Kubernetes leaves the manager guessing. Use I-verbs (designed, built, led) and be honest about team work.
  • Company code names and internal jargon. Shipped Project Falcon for the OMS means nothing outside your company. Say what the system does for users.
  • A broken or empty GitHub link. If you link it, make sure it opens and the pinned projects have a short readme. Otherwise leave it off.
  • Two-column templates and skill bars. Rating yourself 4 out of 5 in Python tells the reader nothing, and columns can come out scrambled in hiring software. Use a single column.

Frequently asked questions

What should a software engineer put on a resume?

Contact details and an optional GitHub or portfolio link, a headline naming your kind of engineering, a short summary, your work experience with measurable results, a skills section of languages and tools, and your education. Add projects if you have less than two years of experience, and certifications if you have them.

How long should a software engineer resume be?

One page for most engineers with under ten years of experience. Staff and principal engineers with long careers can use two pages, as long as the most recent and relevant work is on the first.

Should I include a GitHub link?

Yes, if it shows work you are proud of: pinned repositories with a short readme explaining what each does and how to run it. An empty or abandoned profile does not help, so leave it off in that case.

How do I write a software engineer resume with no experience?

Lead with education and two or three projects written like jobs: what you built, the tools, and who used it or what it achieved. Add internships, research, hackathons, open-source contributions and teaching assistant work. The recent graduate guide shows the layout.

What if I cannot share numbers from my job?

Use percentages, ranges or relative changes instead of confidential figures, such as cut page load time by about half or supported roughly 10,000 daily users. Only use numbers you could explain in an interview.

Should I list every programming language I know?

No. List the ones you could use in a technical interview tomorrow, with your strongest first. A language you used once in a class belongs in a project description, if anywhere.

Do software engineers need certifications?

No. No license or certification is required. Cloud certifications such as AWS Certified Developer can help, especially for backend and platform roles or when you are early in your career, but experience and projects matter more.

What is the difference between a software engineer and a software developer resume?

In most postings the titles mean the same job, and government statistics count them together. Use the title the posting uses in your headline. Engineer postings sometimes stress system design and scale a little more.

Should I put my skills section at the top?

For experienced engineers, put it after experience so your results come first. For new graduates and career changers, a short skills section near the top helps a recruiter see the match quickly.

How do I show a promotion at the same company?

List the company once or twice and give each title its own dates and bullets, as the example does with Software Engineer I and II. It shows growth without repeating the company description.
