Scrum Master Resume: Examples (2026)

Scrum master resume example with summary and bullet examples, agile skills, PSM, CSM and PMI-ACP certifications, official pay data and a free template.

Template:

A scrum master with four years of experience, previously a software tester, applying for a senior scrum master role at a larger software company.

Why this resume works

  • The bullets measure the team, not the meetings: releases every 2 weeks instead of every 10, and sprint goals met in 85 percent of sprints, up from 50.
  • Supporting 3 teams at once and coaching 2 product owners shows the scale a senior role asks for.
  • Her tester background stays, in one bullet, because it explains why the team's bug rate fell when she introduced a shared definition of done.

Scrum is a way of organizing a team's work into short cycles called sprints, each one month or less (many teams use two weeks), with regular meetings to plan, check progress and improve. The scrum master helps the team use it well: running those meetings, clearing the obstacles that slow people down, coaching the team and the people around it, and making problems visible early. A scrum master does not assign tasks or manage the team, which makes the resume tricky. Your results show up in the team's results, so you have to show how your work changed them.

This guide covers the sections that work, how to write bullets about team improvement with honest numbers, the skills and tools postings ask for (explained in plain words), summary and bullet examples, the certifications from Scrum.org, Scrum Alliance, Scaled Agile and PMI, and a full example for a scrum master with four years of experience applying for a senior role. If your work is closer to deciding what the team builds, see the product manager resume example.

How to write a scrum master resume

1

Headline your role and your strength

Write Scrum Master under your name and add what you are best at, such as Agile Coaching and Team Delivery or Scaled Agile for Large Programs. If you are applying for agile coach roles, use that title only if you have coached beyond a single team.

2

Open with teams, size and domain

Your summary should say how many teams you support, how many people, and what they build. 3 teams of 22 people in total building scheduling tools for clinics gives the reader scale and context in one line. Then add how you work, your certifications and the role you want.

3

Measure the team's improvement, honestly

Hiring managers want to see what changed after you joined: releases more often, sprint goals met more often, fewer bugs after release, work finished faster (cycle time, the time from starting a task to finishing it), or happier teams in surveys. Say it was the team's result and name your part. Avoid comparing velocity (a team's own estimate of work done) between teams; experienced managers see through it.

4

Show coaching and problem removal

Much of the job is invisible: clearing blockers, handling conflict, coaching product owners, teaching new team members Scrum. Make it visible with specifics: the blocker you removed, the dependency you sorted out with another team, the number of people you trained, the workshop you ran.

5

Put certifications where they will be seen

Many scrum master postings ask for a certification such as PSM, CSM or SAFe Scrum Master. List yours with the issuer and year, near the top if you are new, or after experience if your results speak for themselves.

6

Keep earlier careers that explain your strengths

Many scrum masters come from testing, development, project management or business analysis. Keep that job with one or two bullets, because it tells the reader what you understand about the team's work. Finish with skills and education, and keep the resume to one page.

Scrum master resume summary examples

Choose the one closest to where you are and change the details. Each gives the teams you support, how you help them, your certification and the job you want.

New scrum master

Project coordinator with three years on software projects, including a year acting as scrum master for one team of 7 while the role was vacant. Ran all Scrum events, kept the board current in Jira and cut the team's open blockers from about 12 to 3 a sprint. Certified ScrumMaster (CSM); seeking a first full-time scrum master role.

Experienced scrum master

Scrum master with five years supporting web and mobile teams at a bank, currently 2 teams of 16 people. Helped both teams move to releasing every sprint and introduced flow metrics that cut average cycle time from 9 days to 4. PSM I and SAFe Scrum Master certified; seeking a scrum master role in financial technology.

Senior scrum master or agile coach

Agile coach and former scrum master with ten years, now supporting 8 teams and their managers in a 120-person software department. Led the move from yearly releases to monthly, trained 40 people in Scrum and Kanban, and built the department's community of practice for scrum masters. PMI-ACP; seeking an enterprise agile coach role.

Scrum master resume bullet examples

Each bullet shows what changed for the team and your part in it, with a number. Keep the shape and use your own facts.

  • Supported 2 teams through a move from yearly to monthly releases over 3 quarters.
  • Cut average cycle time from 11 days to 5 by limiting work in progress and splitting large tasks.
  • Ran 60 retrospectives in 2 years; the team tracked and finished 85 percent of the actions agreed.
  • Resolved a long-running dependency with the data team by setting up a shared weekly planning slot, ending 3 sprints of delays.
  • Trained 35 new team members and managers in Scrum basics with a half-day workshop.
  • Raised team satisfaction in quarterly surveys from 3.1 to 4.2 out of 5 after changes agreed in retrospectives.
  • Facilitated planning for a SAFe program of 6 teams and 55 people each quarter.
  • Introduced a visible blocker board that cut the average time to clear a blocker from 4 days to 1.
  • Coached a product owner new to the role, bringing the backlog from 1 to 3 sprints of ready work.
  • Moved 4 teams from spreadsheets to Jira boards with shared reports for leadership.
  • Helped a team cut bugs found after release by 30 percent by adding testing to its definition of done.

Certifications for scrum masters

No license is required to work as a scrum master, but a certification is common in postings, and some list one as required. The rules of Scrum come from the Scrum Guide, written by Scrum's creators Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland and free to read online; the Scrum.org test, for one, is based on it. The main certifications, as of September 2026:

  • Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I) from Scrum.org: earned by passing an online test; a course is recommended but not required, and Scrum.org says the certification does not expire and has no renewal fee.
  • Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) from Scrum Alliance: requires a 16-hour course with an approved trainer, then a 50-question test. It must be renewed every two years with continuing education.
  • SAFe Scrum Master from Scaled Agile: for scrum masters in large organizations using the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), which coordinates many teams on one program.
  • PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP) from the Project Management Institute: covers several agile methods, not only Scrum. It asks for agile experience (for example, 2 years in the last 5) and 21 hours of agile training.

The example, line by line

The example is for Rachel, a scrum master with four years of experience who used to be a software tester and now wants a senior role. Here is what each part does.

Headline: Scrum Master, Agile Coaching and Team Delivery. It signals she does more than run meetings, which is what senior postings look for.

Summary: four years, the scale (3 teams, 22 people) and what the teams build, then how she helps, then her tester background and certifications, then the job she wants.

Experience: five bullets for her current role. The first sets the scope. The next four are team results with her part stated: releases every 2 weeks instead of every 10, sprint goals met 85 percent of the time instead of 50, 2 product owners coached until their teams had 2 sprints of work ready, and 45 percent fewer bugs after release. Her tester job keeps one bullet: 4 releases a year and the retrospectives that led to her new role.

Certifications: PMI-ACP from 2025 and PSM I from 2022, placed before skills because many postings screen for them.

Skills and education: eight skills in posting language, then her psychology degree from 2019, which fits the coaching side of the job.

Mistakes that cost scrum masters interviews

  • Listing ceremonies as achievements. Facilitated daily standups is the job description. Say what improved because of how you ran them.
  • Bragging about velocity. Velocity is a team's own estimate and easy to inflate. Use releases, sprint goals met, cycle time or bugs after release instead.
  • Sounding like a project manager. Words like assigned tasks or managed the team suggest you do not know the role. Use coached, facilitated, helped the team.
  • Claiming the team's results as yours alone. Say helped the team move to and name your part. Hiring managers trust that more.
  • Leaving out what the team built. Scrum masters in healthcare, banking or games face different problems. Name the product and the industry.
  • A certification without experience. If you have PSM or CSM but no scrum master job yet, show the agile work you did in your current role: running a retrospective, keeping the board, removing blockers.

Frequently asked questions

What should a scrum master put on a resume?

Contact details, a headline, a summary with the teams you support and what they build, experience with team results and your part in them, certifications such as PSM, CSM or PMI-ACP, a skills list, and your education.

Which scrum master certification is best?

It depends on the employer. PSM I and CSM both appear often in postings; PSM needs only a test, while CSM needs a course and renewal every two years. SAFe Scrum Master suits large companies using SAFe, and PMI-ACP suits organizations that already use PMI.

How do I become a scrum master with no experience?

Most scrum masters move from testing, development, project coordination or business analysis. Show agile work in your current job, such as running retrospectives or keeping the team board, earn a certification, and ask to act as scrum master for a team.

What metrics should a scrum master use on a resume?

Release frequency, the share of sprints that met their goal, cycle time, bugs found after release, blockers cleared and team survey scores. Avoid velocity comparisons, which are easy to misread.

Is a scrum master the same as a project manager?

No. A project manager plans and controls scope, time and budget. A scrum master helps a self-managing team use Scrum well and removes obstacles. Many people have done both; say which parts of your work fit each.

How many teams should a scrum master support?

It varies by company, often one to three teams. Say how many you support and how many people, so the reader can judge your scale.

Should I include my background before becoming a scrum master?

Yes, in a line or two. A background in testing, development or analysis explains what you understand about the team's work and is a real strength.

How long should a scrum master resume be?

One page for most. Agile coaches with many years and large transformation work can use two, with the most recent and relevant roles on the first page.

What is the difference between a scrum master and an agile coach resume?

A scrum master resume centers on one to three teams. An agile coach resume adds work across a department or company: coaching managers, training many people and changing how the organization plans.

Do scrum masters need technical skills?

Not programming, but understanding how software is built, tested and released helps a lot. Knowing tools like Jira and Azure DevOps and being able to talk about testing and releases are common asks.
