Account Manager Resume: Examples (2026)

Account manager resume example with retention and growth results, summaries, bullets, skills and certifications, plus official figures and a free template.

Template:

An account manager at a payroll and HR services company applying for a senior account manager job at a benefits administration firm.

Why this resume works

  • The first bullet sizes the book (85 clients, $2.3 million in yearly recurring revenue), so every result after it has context.
  • Retention and growth are separate: 95 percent retention against a company average of 89 percent, then 18 percent growth from 27 clients adding services.
  • The saved $140,000 client is told as a short story with the action that worked, which gives the interviewer an easy first question.

An account manager is hired to keep customers and grow them, so the resume has to prove both. The hiring manager wants the size of the book you handle (how many clients, how much yearly revenue), how much of it you kept, how much you added through upgrades and new services, and how you handled the client who was about to leave. Those numbers are what separate an account manager from a customer service role with a nicer title.

This guide shows what to put on an account manager resume, the metrics that matter (retention, expansion and renewals), summary and bullet examples for new, experienced and key account managers, the skills and software postings name, the optional certifications, and a full example for a payroll services account manager applying for a senior role. If most of your job is winning brand-new customers, the sales representative resume example will fit better.

How to write an account manager resume

1

Say what kind of clients you manage

Under your name, a headline that names the industry and client type: Account Manager, Payroll and HR Services or Key Account Manager, Consumer Packaged Goods. Managing 200 small businesses and managing 4 national retailers are very different jobs, and the reader needs to know which one you do.

2

Size your book in the first bullet

Number of accounts and the revenue they bring in each year, plus what you are the main contact for. Every other number on the page depends on this one. If revenue figures are confidential, round them or give the growth as a percentage.

3

Show retention and growth separately

Retention (how much revenue you kept) and expansion (how much you added through upgrades, new products or more locations) are the two numbers account managers are judged on. Give each its own bullet, and compare retention to the company or team average if you know it.

4

Tell one save story

Pick the client you kept when they were about to leave, and put it in one bullet: the value of the account, what went wrong, and what you did. It shows how you handle pressure and gives the interviewer a strong place to start.

5

Show how you work with the rest of the company

Account managers pull in support, billing, product and implementation teams. Mention quarterly business reviews, escalations you led and feedback you passed to the product team. Name the CRM or customer success tool you use, such as Salesforce, HubSpot or Gainsight.

6

Keep earlier jobs and education brief

Support, onboarding or inside sales jobs before account management are worth a line each, since they explain your product knowledge. Then your degree and any certifications. One page is enough for most account managers; two once you have ten or more years.

Account manager resume bullet examples

Account manager bullets should show book size, retention, growth and relationships. Each example has a number; use your own.

  • Own a book of 120 software accounts worth $3.8 million in yearly recurring revenue.
  • Renewed 98 percent of contracts up for renewal in 2025, the highest rate on a team of 9.

  • Brought 14 accounts from a departing colleague through the handover with no losses.
  • Raised client satisfaction survey scores for the book from 7.8 to 8.9 out of 10.
  • Worked with billing to settle 30+ invoice disputes a year, recovering $95,000 in unpaid balances.
  • Set up a monthly check-in schedule for 50 smaller accounts that had not heard from the company in a year.

Certifications for account managers

No license or certification is required for most account manager jobs. Employers look at your results and industry knowledge first. These optional credentials are real and can help, depending on the kind of accounts you manage:

  • Certified Strategic Account Manager (CSAM) from the Strategic Account Management Association: for strategic, key and national account managers. You need a current strategic account role and manager sponsorship to start.
  • Inbound Sales Certification from HubSpot Academy: a free online course covering buyer conversations and follow-up, useful for newer account managers.
  • Securities qualification exams from FINRA: only if your accounts buy securities products and your role needs registration.

The example, line by line

The example is for Hannah, an account manager at a payroll services company who wants a senior role with bigger employer clients. Here is what each part does.

Headline: Account Manager, Payroll and HR Services. The benefits firm she is applying to sells to the same HR teams, so the industry is part of the match.

Summary: six years in the industry and four managing 85 clients worth $2.3 million, then retention (95 percent) and growth (18 percent in two years). The third sentence shows how she handles trouble, and the last names the job.

Current job: five bullets that follow the job itself: the book, retention against the 89 percent average, growth from 27 clients adding services, business reviews with the 20 largest clients, and the $140,000 save. Together they cover keeping, growing and rescuing accounts.

Onboarding job: one line with 60+ clients and setup time cut from 21 to 14 days. It explains how well she knows the product.

Skills and education: account management skills and the three tools she uses daily, then her communication degree.

Mistakes that weaken account manager resumes

  • No book size. Without the number of accounts and their value, a retention rate or growth figure has nothing to stand on.
  • Writing it like a support job. Answered client questions and resolved issues is part of the work, but account managers are hired to keep and grow revenue. Lead with that.
  • Only new business numbers. If the role is about existing clients, a resume full of cold calls and new logos suggests a hunter, not a farmer. Match the balance of the job.
  • Naming clients without permission. Describe accounts by type and size instead, such as a 40-location dental group. It protects confidential relationships and still makes the point.
  • Ignoring lost accounts. If retention is below average, give the reason and what changed, or focus on growth and saves. Leaving a big gap in the story invites the question anyway.

Frequently asked questions

What should an account manager put on a resume?

A headline with the industry and client type, a summary with book size, retention and growth, each job with bullets on the accounts you keep, grow and save, the CRM and customer success tools you use, and your education.

What is the difference between an account manager and a sales representative resume?

A sales representative resume centers on new business: prospecting, new accounts and quota. An account manager resume centers on existing clients: retention, renewals, upgrades and relationships. Many jobs mix both, so match the posting.

What metrics should an account manager include?

The number of accounts and their yearly value, revenue retention or renewal rate, growth from existing clients, satisfaction or net promoter scores, and the value of any accounts you saved.

How do I become an account manager with no experience?

Start from a customer support, onboarding or inside sales role at the same kind of company. Show accounts you helped keep, upgrades you passed on and client relationships you built, and name account management as your goal in the summary.

Should I list client names on my resume?

Usually not, unless you have permission or the relationship is public. Describe them by industry and size instead. It avoids confidentiality problems and still shows the scale of your work.

How long should an account manager resume be?

One page for most people. Two pages works for key or national account managers with ten or more years, as long as the first page carries your current book and results.

Is there a certification for account managers?

None is required. The Strategic Account Management Association offers the CSAM for strategic and key account managers, and HubSpot Academy has a free sales certification. Choose one only if it fits your accounts.

What skills should an account manager list?

Account planning, renewals, upselling, business reviews, negotiation, escalation handling and the CRM or customer success platform by name. Show relationship skills through your results.

How do I show I saved an account?

In one bullet: the account's yearly value, what was going wrong, what you did, and the result. For example, saved a $140,000-a-year client by running weekly calls with the implementation team until the problem was fixed.

What is a key account manager?

An account manager who looks after a small number of large, important clients, often national or global. The resume shows fewer accounts, much larger values and longer planning cycles.
