Sales Manager Resume: Examples (2026)

Sales manager resume example showing team quota, hiring and coaching results, with summaries, bullets, skills, official pay figures and a free template.

Template:

A sales manager at an office technology dealer applying for a regional sales manager position over three branches.

Why this resume works

  • Every bullet in the current job is about the team, not her own deals: 9 account executives, a $10.2 million quota finished at 103 percent, and revenue grown from $7.8 million to $10.5 million.
  • Hiring and retention get their own numbers (first-year turnover from 4 of 6 hires down to 1 of 7), which is the question a regional director asks first.
  • Her years as a top rep are compressed into two short jobs, so the reader sees she earned the role (President's Club in 2019 and 2020) without the page drifting back into individual selling.

The moment you become a sales manager, your own closing numbers stop being the story. A director or vice president hiring for the role wants to know what happens to a team under you: whether it hits its number, whether the reps you hire survive their first year, whether your forecast can be trusted, and whether top performers stay. A sales manager resume that reads like a rep's resume with a bigger quota misses the point.

This guide shows how to write a sales manager resume around team results, with summary examples for new, experienced and senior managers, bullets you can adapt, the skills and systems the job asks for, what to say about certifications (none are required), and a full example for a dealer sales manager applying for a regional role. Still carrying a personal quota and hoping to move up? Start with the sales representative resume example, and add the coaching and training you already do.

How to write a sales manager resume

1

Put the team size and what you sell in the headline

Under your name, a line such as Sales Manager, B2B Office Technology or District Sales Manager, Medical Devices. Hiring for sales leaders is often industry-specific, so the product line matters as much as the title.

2

Write a summary about the team you built

Sentence one: years in sales, years managing, how many reps and what they sell. Sentence two: the team's best results, such as revenue growth and percent of team quota, plus a retention or hiring figure. Sentence three: the scope you want next, such as more reps, more branches or a new market.

3

Lead each management job with team numbers

Start with headcount and the team quota, then how the team finished against it for the years you can share. Follow with growth, win rate, average deal size or new logos for the whole team. Your own deals only belong here if you still carry a personal number.

4

Show how you develop people

Directors hire managers who can turn average reps into good ones. Give numbers for hiring, ramp time, first-year turnover, reps promoted, or the share of the team hitting quota before and after your coaching. Coached 3 reps from under 80 percent to over 100 percent of quota is worth more than any line about leadership style.

5

Include the operating side of the job

Forecast accuracy, pipeline reviews, territory design, commission plans, pricing approvals and work with marketing or operations. These tell a hiring director you can run a sales function, not just motivate it. Name the CRM and reporting tools you manage in.

6

Compress your rep years

Keep earlier sales jobs to one or two lines each: the title, a quota result and any award such as President's Club. It proves you earned the role, and leaves room on the first page for the management results that decide the interview.

Sales manager resume summary examples

Use the one nearest to where you are now. Each covers scope, team results and the next role you want.

First-time sales manager

Sales team lead with seven years in inside software sales, the last two coaching a pod of 5 reps while carrying a reduced quota. The pod finished 2025 at 108 percent, and two of its reps were promoted to account executive. Seeking a first full sales manager role leading an inside sales team.

Experienced sales manager

Sales manager with nine years in medical device sales and four leading a team of 8 territory reps across the Carolinas. Grew the region from $14 million to $19 million and kept voluntary rep turnover under one person a year. Seeking a larger region or a national accounts leadership role.

Senior sales leader

Regional sales director with fifteen years in industrial distribution, leading 5 branch sales managers and 42 reps with a combined $120 million target. Built the company's first inside sales team and forecasting process, and grew the region at twice the company rate for three years. Seeking a vice president of sales role.

Sales manager resume bullet examples

These bullets are written about the team, which is how a sales manager's work is judged. Keep the structure and use your own figures.

  • Took over a 7-person team at 81 percent of quota and brought it to 106 percent within 18 months.
  • Hired 12 reps over three years; 10 were still on the team or promoted after their first year.
  • Cut average new-rep ramp time from 7 to 4 months with a shadowing plan and weekly call reviews.
  • Raised the team win rate on qualified opportunities from 22 to 31 percent by adding a mandatory discovery checklist.
  • Coached 3 underperforming reps from below 70 percent to above 100 percent of quota in two quarters.
  • Redrew 6 territories using account potential data, balancing opportunity so no rep's pipeline differed by more than 15 percent.
  • Kept the quarterly forecast within 4 percent of actual bookings for 10 consecutive quarters.
  • Launched a partner referral program with 14 local IT firms that produced $1.3 million in new bookings in year one.
  • Promoted 4 reps into senior or key account roles and 1 into a sales manager position.
  • Negotiated a three-year, $2.4 million agreement with a regional hospital network alongside the account executive.
  • Worked with marketing to rebuild lead routing, cutting response time on inbound leads from two days to 3 hours.

Certifications for sales managers

No license or certification is required to be a sales manager. The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes the usual path as a bachelor's degree, often in business, plus several years of sales experience. A few credentials are still worth knowing about, depending on your industry:

  • Certified Strategic Account Manager (CSAM) from the Strategic Account Management Association: for strategic and key account managers and their leaders. It needs a current strategic account role and sponsorship from your manager.
  • Certified Professional Manufacturers' Representative (CPMR) from the Manufacturers Representatives Educational Research Foundation, run by the Institute for Professional Advancement: for owners and senior managers of independent rep firms.
  • Supervisory securities exams, such as the Series 9 and 10 or Series 24, run by FINRA: for managers who supervise registered securities salespeople. Other industries do not need them.

The example, line by line

The example is for Renee, who manages a team of account executives at an office technology dealer and wants to run sales across several branches. Here is how the page is built.

Headline: Sales Manager, B2B Office Technology. The regional role is at a dealer in the same business, so naming the product line is a direct match.

Summary: eleven years in sales, five of them managing 9 account executives, then the two results a regional director cares about: revenue from $7.8 million to $10.5 million and first-year turnover down from 4 of 6 hires to 1 of 7. The last sentence names the scope she wants.

Current job: five bullets that cover the whole job. Team quota and finish (103 percent of $10.2 million), growth and how it happened, hiring and onboarding (a 60-day plan), forecasting (within 5 percent in 7 of the last 8 quarters), and a commission change that moved contract length from 26 to 38 months. None of them is about a deal she closed herself.

Earlier jobs: one line each. The senior account executive line gives 112 percent of quota and President's Club in 2019 and 2020. The first job shows she can open new business: 48 accounts in two years.

Skills and education: eight skills taken from regional manager postings, from coaching to commission plan design, and her business degree.

Mistakes that hold sales manager resumes back

  • Writing about your own deals. If most bullets are about accounts you closed, a director will wonder whether you actually manage. Move your own selling to one line unless you still carry a quota.
  • No team size or quota. Leading 4 reps and leading 40 are different jobs. Give headcount and the team number for every management role.
  • Leadership words with no proof. Servant leader and people-first coach say nothing a director can check. Turnover, ramp time and promotions do.
  • Leaving out the misses. If you took over a team below target, say where it started. Moving a team from 81 to 106 percent is a better story than 106 percent alone.
  • Forgetting the operating work. Forecasting, territory design and commission plans are a large part of the job. A resume without them reads like a senior rep's.

Frequently asked questions

What should a sales manager put on a resume?

A headline with your title and industry, a summary with team size and team results, each management job with headcount, quota, growth, hiring and retention figures, the systems you manage in, a short line for each earlier sales job, and your education.

Should a sales manager list personal sales numbers?

Only if you still carry a personal quota, or for the jobs before you became a manager. Once you lead a team, the team's results are what gets you hired.

How do I show leadership on a sales manager resume?

With numbers about people: reps hired and still on the team after a year, ramp time for new reps, reps coached from below to above quota, and reps promoted. Those show leadership better than any adjective.

How do I move from sales rep to sales manager on a resume?

Show the management work you already do: training new hires, running a team meeting, mentoring a struggling rep, filling in for your manager. Give each a number and put it in your current job, and say in the summary that you want to lead a team.

How long should a sales manager resume be?

One page works for many first-time managers. Two pages is normal once you have several management roles, as long as the first page holds your current team results.

Do sales managers need a degree?

Many employers prefer a bachelor's degree, often in business or marketing, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics lists it as the typical path. Strong results as a rep and a record of leading people can outweigh it for some roles.

Is there a certification for sales managers?

None is required. Strategic account leaders may earn the CSAM from the Strategic Account Management Association, and managers who supervise securities salespeople need FINRA supervisory exams. For most sales managers, results matter more than any certificate.

How do I describe a team that missed quota?

Give the starting point and the direction: took over a team at 72 percent and finished the year at 94 percent. If the whole company missed, compare your team to the company average.

What skills should a sales manager list?

Forecasting, pipeline reviews, coaching, hiring, territory design, commission plans and the CRM by name. Put the most important ones inside your bullets as well as in the skills section.

Should I include President's Club on a manager resume?

Yes, for your years as a rep, in one line with the years. If your team as a whole produced several winners, say how many, since that is a manager's result.
