Translator Resume: Examples and Skills (2026)

Make language direction, translation work and review methods clear with a fictional translator resume, practical writing advice and a free template.

Template:

Fictional translator Dorian Salcedo applying to a Tucson product documentation translation team. Names, employers, education, assignments and counts are invented illustrations.

Why this resume works

  • The label and summary identify Spanish into English rather than implying every language direction.
  • Source words, assignments and glossary entries remain different measures with their own periods.
  • Reviewer feedback and earlier assistant work show the process without inventing perfect accuracy or a professional credential.

A translator resume should make the source language, target language and type of text easy to find. Saying you speak several languages does not explain which direction you translate professionally or what subject matter you understand. Connect the language pair to actual written assignments, terminology work and review, and keep spoken interpreting responsibilities separate unless you genuinely performed them.

The fictional sample features Dorian Salcedo applying to an English-language product documentation translation team in Tucson. His employers, university, assignments and counts are invented. He translates Spanish source documents into English and works through a reviewer; the sample does not claim reverse-direction work, court interpreting or ATA certification. Its selectable text and editable data match the image. Use the structure, then replace the illustration with your own supported language and project history.

Choose translation, revision or interpreting evidence

A written translator can show source analysis, terminology choices, target-language writing and review. An interpreter works with spoken or signed communication in a different service context. If your background includes both, label the assignments and relevant qualifications separately. Do not use a telephone interpreting task as proof of a written translation portfolio merely because both involve the same languages.

For a first application, clearly labeled coursework, volunteer work or an independently created demonstration can show preparation. State the original context and your contribution. Use material you have permission to translate and share, and do not invent a paying client. An experienced applicant can lead with relevant deliveries and review responsibilities. Keep freelance assignments under a clear truthful description rather than creating fictional employment relationships for real work.

Revise an unsupported accuracy claim

Weak: Translated every language perfectly with one hundred percent accuracy.

Fictional revision: Translated twenty-eight thousand Spanish source words into English monthly for product help documents, resolving source questions and incorporating reviewer feedback.

The revision identifies direction, volume and process. It removes the universal claim that no available evidence supports. If a client quality measure is reliable and may be shared, describe its rubric, assessed sample and period accurately. A passed automated check is not proof that every translation decision was correct, and repeat business alone is not a numerical accuracy score.

Check permission before publishing client text, bilingual samples, translation memories or glossary files. Do not send protected material to an outside service merely to create a portfolio or demonstrate a tool. When discussing machine-assisted work, state your actual role, approved process and review responsibility. A fictional example.com portfolio address would be a placeholder, not a real collection that this guide has inspected.

How to write a translator resume

1

Put language direction in view

State the source and target language for work you actually undertake. Spanish into English and English into Spanish are different claims. If you work in both directions, support both; do not assume conversational fluency establishes professional writing ability in every language. Name the text type or subject area that fits the vacancy so the reader can understand your assignment scope.

2

Describe the translation process

Show how you received the brief, researched terminology, recorded ambiguities and reviewed the finished document. Explain whether you translated, revised another translator's work, proofread the target text or checked layout. Those contributions can all be useful but are not identical. Keep spoken interpreting and written translation distinct rather than borrowing duties from a combined occupation description.

3

Choose assignments that support the target

Select a few relevant document types and explain your own responsibility. A product help article, literary passage and official document may involve different preparation and instructions. Retain client confidentiality and use a general description when names or content cannot be shared. Do not claim legal, medical or court expertise solely because you translated a general text containing related terminology.

4

Make volume and quality claims auditable

State whether a word count concerns the source or target text and retain the period. Translation, review and post-editing volumes should not be blended without explanation. A quality score needs its actual rubric and denominator; an on-time rate needs a defined set of assignments. Without reliable outcome records, explain the checks, terminology decisions and reviewer handoff instead of inventing perfect accuracy.

5

Represent credentials within their scope

List actual education and relevant earned awards. ATA states that certification is specific to a language pair and direction. Membership, a practice test and a translated document accompanied by a statement are different from ATA translator certification. Verify the receiving organization's requirements for official documents and specialized work rather than assuming one credential or language qualification covers every task.

6

Check the file and application path

Follow the employer or agency instructions for the resume and any translation test. In CVPoet, create an account or sign in, open the fictional sample and replace its details in the builder. Select Update before downloading the PDF. Review language direction, names, dates, links and text selection. Classic is free with an account; other premium designs require a Job Search Pass.

Skills and keywords for a translator resume

Use a focused skills list that connects language ability to real translation work. Terminology research, bilingual revision, proofreading and formatting checks serve different purposes. Describe the translation or review software you actually used without claiming certification in it. Using a translation memory is not the same as authoring a machine-translation system or managing an entire localization program.

Hard skills

  • Spanish into English written translation
  • Terminology and reference research
  • Source ambiguity tracking
  • Bilingual and final document checks

Soft skills

  • Clarifying a brief
  • Responding to reviewer feedback
  • Managing assignment handoffs

Tools and software

  • Translation-memory tools actually used
  • Approved terminology databases
  • Document comparison and formatting tools

Translator resume summary examples

These fictional alternatives illustrate different stages. They are separate from Dorian's sample, and they do not establish additional language directions or credentials for him.

First translation application

Language graduate seeking a supervised translation role, with clearly labeled practice assignments and terminology research. States the source and target language and explains review, without presenting coursework as paid client delivery or claiming certification.

Product documentation translator

Spanish into English translator working on product help and customer information. Researches terminology, records source questions and revises drafts after reviewer feedback, with reliable assignment scope and final document checks.

Experienced translation reviewer

Translator with documented responsibility for reviewing an assigned language direction and subject area. Explains the review standard, coordination with authors and translators, and actual editorial authority without claiming expertise in every language or attributing the whole team's output personally.

Translator resume bullet examples

These fictional examples show ways to describe assignments and review. Use your own records for counts, word volumes and periods. A well-explained terminology decision can be useful without a number; do not invent an accuracy score or client result merely to make a line quantitative.

  • Translated 24,000 Spanish source words into English monthly for assigned help documents.
  • Delivered 9 assigned translations monthly through the documented review process.
  • Maintained 78 approved glossary entries for one product family.
  • Recorded 6 source ambiguities during a quarterly terminology review.
  • Checked names and numbers in 14 assigned bilingual documents monthly.
  • Prepared terminology notes for 4 product information assignments.
  • Revised 8 translated help topics after reviewer feedback during a release update.
  • Compared 3 authorized reference documents before proposing a terminology choice.
  • Organized reviewer comments for 7 assigned deliveries during the month.
  • Checked the final layout of 12 assigned document sets during a quarterly update.

Translation education, certification and language direction

The BLS combined occupation profile describes varied preparation and credential expectations. ATA specifies the language pairs and directions covered by its certification. Verify the current award and task requirements rather than copying a general certified translator label.

  • Use an earned credential's exact title, issuer, language pair and direction where applicable. Dorian does not claim ATA certification, and his degree is presented as education.
  • Keep association membership, exam preparation and language-course completion distinct from translator certification. A practice result does not establish that an official certification exam was passed.
  • Check the actual receiving authority and assignment for official or specialized documents. Written translation credentials do not automatically establish court interpreting authorization, reverse-direction competence or permission to provide professional legal advice.

The example, line by line

Direction: Dorian works from Spanish source material into English. His label, summary and work history agree; they do not imply the reverse direction or additional languages.

Words: twenty-eight thousand monthly source words measure the Spanish input assigned to him. This is not an English output count, a daily target or the agency's total volume.

Deliveries: eleven monthly assignments pass through the team review process. Different documents can vary in length, so the number does not establish eleven equal projects or an on-time delivery rate.

Terminology: ninety-five approved entries belong to one documentation program. They are maintained terminology records, not words that should be added to the monthly translation volume.

Questions: seven source-text questions during a quarterly review show that ambiguity was recorded and resolved through approved responses. Raising a question is not evidence of poor language ability or permission to change the author's meaning.

Earlier work: sixteen monthly document sets and five terminology assignments remain assistant work under review. The 2019 degree is not described as a certification, and the sample does not invent client identities, legal authority or a perfect accuracy score.

Translator resume mistakes

  • Language direction unclear: state the actual source and target.
  • Interpreting relabeled: keep spoken and written assignments distinct.
  • Word units mixed: distinguish source, target and review volume.
  • Accuracy invented: retain a real rubric or describe the review process.
  • Credential scope expanded: keep the issuer and certified direction accurate.
  • Client texts exposed: verify permission before sharing samples or using outside tools.

Frequently asked questions

What should a translator resume include?

State your actual source and target languages, relevant text types, translation or review responsibilities, tools and education. Include a genuine credential within its scope when relevant. Explain your own contribution and avoid a broad list of languages without evidence of professional direction and use.

Should I list both translation directions?

Only claim directions you can support. Spanish into English and English into Spanish are different professional tasks. Speaking both languages does not automatically establish equivalent writing and subject expertise in each direction. Keep the label, summary, experience and any credential consistent.

Is a translator also an interpreter?

Some people do both, but the assignments are distinct. Translation concerns written text; interpreting concerns spoken or signed communication. Label the actual work and relevant qualifications separately instead of using a combined occupation title to imply experience you do not have.

Does ATA certification cover every language I list?

No. ATA describes certification by specific language pair and direction. State the exact award you hold and verify its current scope. Membership, coursework and practice tests are separate. Dorian's fictional sample does not claim ATA certification.

What is the difference between translator certification and a certified document?

An individual professional credential and a statement accompanying a particular translation are different things. Check the receiving organization's actual requirements. Do not assume that one credential makes every document acceptable or establishes court interpreting or legal advisory authority.

How should I show translation volume?

Identify source or target words, the period and the type of work. Keep translation, review and post-editing distinct. Assignment counts and glossary entries are different units and should not be added together. Use only reliable records and information you are permitted to share.

What if I have no paid translation history?

Use clearly labeled coursework, volunteer work or an independently created demonstration when relevant and authorized. Explain the language direction, text purpose and review. Do not invent a client or present practice work as paid employment. A short objective can clarify the role you are seeking.

Should I claim an accuracy percentage?

Only use a reliable measure with its actual rubric, assessed sample, period and attribution. A completed software check, repeat client or delivery count is not an accuracy score. A concrete explanation of terminology and review is preferable to an invented perfect-quality claim.

Can I use client documents in a portfolio?

Verify permission and confidentiality before sharing source text, translations or related files. Use an appropriate authorized or independently created sample when real work is protected. Do not upload private client material to an outside tool simply to make application evidence.
