Production Assistant Resume: Examples (2026)

Production assistant resume example for film, TV and commercials: credits, days on set, call sheets, runs and set skills, plus bullets and a free template.

Template:

A freelance set production assistant with two years of feature, TV and commercial credits applying for a set PA job on a scripted TV series.

Why this resume works

  • A credits list comes right after the summary, with project type, role and shooting days, which is the format a 2nd AD scans first.
  • Set skills are specific: lockups, background holding for up to 120 extras, radio channels and 2,500+ walkie sign-outs without a lost radio.
  • The driver's license, clean record and 15-passenger van experience are stated plainly, because runs and shuttles are a big part of the job.

Production assistant jobs are a common way into film, television and commercial production, and they are hired fast. A key PA, second assistant director or production coordinator often has a day or two to fill a spot, and reads your resume quickly. They want to see the productions you have worked on, how many days, whether you worked on set or in the office, and proof that you are reliable, quick on a walkie and safe behind the wheel of a van.

This guide shows how to write that resume, with a full example for a set PA applying to a scripted TV series, summaries for three levels, bullets you can adapt, the skills and tools productions ask for, and what is real about training programs and unions. If you are also looking for post-production work, see the video editor resume example.

How to write a production assistant resume

1

Keep it to one page with contact details that work on set

Your name, a phone you answer on the first ring, an email and the city you are local to. Productions often hire crew who live near where they shoot, so give your city and say if you can work as a local in another market. A headline such as Production Assistant, Set and Office is enough.

2

Lead with a credits list

Production people read credits first. List your role, the project type (feature, scripted series, unscripted, commercial, music video), the number of days and the year. Name the show only when it has been announced and you are allowed to; otherwise describe it, like scripted streaming drama.

3

Count your days and say where you worked

Days worked is the plainest proof of experience in this job. Give a total in your summary and per project in your credits. Say whether you worked on set, in the office, at base camp, or for a department such as locations, art or wardrobe.

4

Write bullets with real set tasks

Use the words the AD team uses: lockups, background holding, walkie sign-out, call sheets and sides, runs, base camp, company moves. Add the size: how many extras, how many cast and crew, how many errands a day. It shows you have done the job, not just watched it.

5

State your driving and safety facts plainly

Most PA postings ask for a valid driver's license and a clean driving record, and many want someone who can drive a 15-passenger van or a cube truck. If you have those, say so in your summary. Add current First Aid and CPR training and any set safety training your productions required.

6

Add education, then skills, and nothing extra

A film degree or crew training program goes at the bottom, and so does a restaurant or retail job if you need to show reliability. Keep skills practical: set tasks, office software, driving, a second language. Skip a photo and personal details.

  • Handled 1,200 pounds of equipment carts during load in and load out at 6 locations.

Training and credentials for production assistants

No license or certification is required to work as a production assistant. What productions do ask for is practical: a valid driver's license and clean record (set by each production, not by law), availability for long days, and sometimes First Aid and CPR. Union rules for crew depend on the production and the union contract, so do not claim union status on your resume unless a union has confirmed it. The credentials that are worth listing:

  • First Aid, CPR and AED training from the American Red Cross or another recognized provider, listed with the year.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean record: not a certificate, but most PA postings ask for it, so put it in your summary or skills. Mention van or cube truck experience if you have it.
  • The Assistant Directors Training Program, if you are accepted or graduate. According to the Directors Guild of America, it is jointly sponsored by the DGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, trainees complete 350 or 400 days of paid work on film and television projects, and graduates who meet the program's requirements are invited to join the Guild. There is a West Coast program and a New York program, each with its own application rules.

The example, line by line

The example is for Isaiah, a freelance PA in Albuquerque applying to work as a set PA on a scripted TV series. Here is how each part works.

Header: name, headline Production Assistant, Set and Office, phone, email and city. Albuquerque tells the production he is a local hire there.

Summary: 2 years and 140+ days in the first sentence, then the set tasks he handles, then the license and van facts, First Aid and CPR, and availability for a full season.

Selected credits: four credits with role, project type, days and year: 38 days on a streaming drama, 26 on a feature, 54 in the office of a limited series, and 12 commercials over 24 days. None are named, since the productions have not given permission.

Experience: freelance set work grouped as one job with 88 shooting days: lockups on channels 1 and 2, background up to 120 extras, 2,500+ walkie sign-outs, and call sheets for 80+ people. The office PA job adds 6 to 10 runs a day with zero driving incidents over 54 days.

Certificate, education and skills: Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED from 2025, a crew training certificate, and set skills written in crew language.

Mistakes that keep production assistants off the call list

  • No days or dates. Worked on several films tells a 2nd AD nothing. Count your days for each project.
  • Naming unannounced shows. Many productions work under confidentiality agreements and code names. Describe the project instead.
  • Inflated titles. Calling yourself a coordinator or assistant director when you were a PA is easy to check with one phone call. Use the real title.
  • Claiming union membership you do not have. Membership and eligibility are set by each union. Leave it off unless the union has confirmed it.
  • Leaving out the driving facts. Runs and shuttles are a large part of the job. If you can drive a van or truck with a clean record, say so.
  • A long, designed resume. A 2nd AD hiring for tomorrow wants one clean page with credits at the top.

Frequently asked questions

What should a production assistant put on a resume?

Contact details with your city, a headline, a short summary with total days and set skills, a credits list with role, project type, days and year, work history with specific set tasks, driving and safety facts, education and practical skills.

How do I write a production assistant resume with no experience?

Use student films, music videos, volunteer shoots and events you helped run. Count the days and list your tasks. Add any job that shows reliability and customer skills, like restaurant or retail work, and your driving facts.

Should I list the names of shows I worked on?

Only when the project has been announced and you are allowed to. Otherwise describe it, such as scripted streaming drama or national commercial, with your role and days.

What is the difference between a set PA and an office PA?

A set PA works with the assistant directors on location: lockups, background, walkies and base camp. An office PA works in the production office on phones, paperwork, copies, deliveries and runs. Say which you have done.

Do production assistants need to be in a union?

Not as a rule. Whether a crew job is covered by a union depends on the production, the union and its contract, so ask the production or the union. If you want to become an assistant director, the DGA's Assistant Directors Training Program is a formal route; check its own site for current rules.

Do I need a driver's license to be a PA?

Most PA postings ask for one, along with a clean driving record, because runs and shuttles are a big part of the job. It is a production's requirement, not a law, and a few office roles may not need it.

What skills should a production assistant list?

Set tasks (lockups, background, walkies, call sheets, runs), office skills (Microsoft Office or Google Workspace, phones, paperwork), driving and safety training, and soft skills shown through your credits.

How long should a production assistant resume be?

One page. A 2nd AD or coordinator often reads it in a hurry, so put credits and days near the top.

How do I list many short gigs on a resume?

Group them under one entry such as Freelance Set Production Assistant, and list your best projects in a credits section with days and year.

What comes after production assistant?

Common next steps are key PA, then additional or second assistant director on set, or assistant coordinator and coordinator in the office. Some PAs move into a department such as locations, camera or editing.
