Dental Assistant Resume: Examples (2026)

Dentists hiring an assistant are picturing the chair: someone who has the next instrument ready before they ask, takes a clean x-ray on the first try, keeps a nervous patient calm and turns the room over on time. Your resume should show exactly that, in numbers, plus the credentials your state requires for the duties you will do. Dental assisting rules differ more from state to state than most healthcare jobs, so being clear about what you are certified to do matters.

Experienced dental assistant

Orthodontic assistant with 6 years in a 2-orthodontist practice, seeing 50 to 60 patients a day for bonding, wire changes and aligner starts. Certified Orthodontic Assistant (COA) from DANB and skilled with iTero scanning and patient photos. Seeking an orthodontic assistant role with training responsibilities.

Lead dental assistant

Lead dental assistant with 11 years in general and implant dentistry, managing a team of 6 assistants across 9 operatories. Built the office's sterilization and supply system and cut monthly supply costs by 14 percent. CDA and state expanded-function credential holder. Seeking a clinical lead or office manager position.

Each example below pairs a chairside task with a number. Keep the pattern and use your own facts.

• Assist on 10 to 14 oral surgery cases a day, including wisdom teeth and implant placement, monitoring patients under sedation with the surgeon.
• Seat, chart and assist on 50+ orthodontic patients a day, including bonding, wire changes and aligner deliveries.
• Turn over operatories in under 6 minutes on average, keeping a 4-dentist schedule on time.
• Take full-mouth x-ray series for 8 to 10 new patients a day, with retakes under 5 percent.

Dental assistant rules are set by each state, usually through its dental board, and they cover which duties an assistant may do and what training or exam each duty needs. Titles differ too: the Dental Assisting National Board points out licensed dental assistants in Minnesota, expanded function dental auxiliaries in New Mexico, registered dental assistants in Tennessee and Michigan, and orthodontic assistant permits in California. Look up your state on DANB's state requirements page, then list the credentials you hold:

• Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) from DANB: earned by passing three component exams, Radiation Health and Safety (RHS), Infection Control (ICE) and General Chairside Assisting (GC), within five years.
• Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam: DANB says its RHS exam is recognized or required in many states for taking dental x-rays. If you passed it on its own, list it.
• Other DANB certifications, listed on DANB's certification page: National Entry Level Dental Assistant (NELDA), Certified Orthodontic Assistant (COA), Certified Preventive Functions Dental Assistant (CPFDA) and Certified Restorative Functions Dental Assistant (CRFDA).
• State registration, license or permit, such as RDA, LDA, EFDA or a radiography permit: name the state and the issuing board.
• CPR or BLS from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross, with the year.

This is Sofia's resume. She has four years in a general practice and is applying to lead the assistants in a larger office. Here is what each part does.

Headline: Certified Dental Assistant (CDA), General Dentistry. Credential and practice type in six words.

Summary: 4 years, a 3-dentist practice and 12 to 16 patients a day come first. Then the skills a lead needs (x-rays, scanning, sterilization, patient comfort), her CDA and BLS, Spanish, and the lead role she wants.

Certifications: the CDA from DANB, earned in 2022, and BLS. Because the CDA includes the RHS and ICE exams, it documents her x-ray and infection control training in one line.

Experience: the first bullet sets the scope. The next two are quality results a dentist values: 25 to 30 x-ray images a day with retakes under 3 percent, and 8 to 10 scans a week with remakes down from 12 to 3 a quarter. Sterilization for 6 operatories and Spanish with 20+ patients a week are the lead responsibilities she already has. Her dental aide job keeps one line: 5 operatories and up to 40 child visits a day.

Education, skills and languages: her certificate program, eight skills including Dentrix by name, and Spanish in its own section.

• Listing duties your state does not allow. Coronal polishing, sealants or x-rays may need a specific credential where you apply. Only list expanded duties you are qualified to do in that state.
• Writing certified without saying by whom. Say DANB CDA, or the state board that issued your registration. Offices verify both.
• No patient or x-ray numbers. A dentist reads 12 patients a day and 25 x-ray images a day as a pace they can plan around. Give yours.
• Forgetting the software. If you know Dentrix, Eaglesoft or Open Dental, say which. It saves the office training time.
• Hiding the specialty. Orthodontic, pediatric and surgical assisting are different jobs. Name the practice type for every position.
