Carpentry does not have one national license. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says carpenters typically learn on the job or through apprenticeships sponsored by groups such as unions and contractor associations, that program requirements differ by program and region, and that specialty certifications are optional. What you can list:

• Apprenticeship: finished or in progress, with the sponsor, your year and your hours. Apprenticeship.gov from the U.S. Department of Labor explains Registered Apprenticeship and has a job finder for carpentry programs near you.
• OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour Construction Outreach card from the OSHA Outreach Training Program: the 10-hour class covers hazard awareness for workers and the 30-hour class suits supervisors and workers with safety duties. OSHA says it is voluntary and not a certification, though some states, cities and employers require it.
• EPA Lead-Safe Certified Renovator: under the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule, anyone paid to do work that disturbs painted surfaces in homes, child care facilities and preschools built before 1978 must be certified, and the renovator course is taught by accredited training providers. Some states run their own programs instead of EPA; the EPA page lists them.
• Craft credentials: if you trained through a program that uses NCCER (the National Center for Construction Education and Research) curriculum, list the credential you earned.
• Contractor license: carpenters who work for a builder usually work under the builder's license. If you plan to take jobs directly from homeowners, check with your state's contractor licensing agency and your city's building department before you bid.

• A headline that just says Carpenter. Framing, finish, remodeling and commercial interiors are different hires. Name yours.
• Tasks with no size. Installed cabinets could mean one bathroom vanity. Set 40+ runs of cabinets tells the builder you have done it at volume.
• Forgetting the homeowner side. Remodelers care how you treat the family living in the house. One bullet about clean sites, daily updates or change orders sets you apart.
• Leaving out lead-safe certification. If you work in older homes and hold the EPA renovator certificate, list it. A remodeler needs certified people on those jobs.
• Listing every hand tool. A hammer and tape measure are a given. List the equipment and methods that set you apart, such as stair building, laser layout or aerial lift training.
